Edinburgh Gin plans new distillery for the city's old town

Ian Macleod Distillers' expansion plans will see production of Edinburgh Gin increase by more than 200%.

GVA Planning team has recently prepared and submitted a detailed planning application and listed building consent application on behalf of GVA’s client Ian Macleod Distillers, for the development of a new distillery and visitor centre in the last five undeveloped arches at East Market Street, Edinburgh to be turned into a modern gin ‘experience’, occupied by their brand, Edinburgh Gin.

Currently Edinburgh Gin’s visitor centre is located at Rutland Place, however due to its success and associated visitor and tourist demands, it has outgrown its current location. The new distillery will invite an estimated 100,000 visitors a year on a journey through the history of gin-making alongside a sensory immersion into flavour, botanicals and distilling. Visitors will also have the chance to make their own gin.

First-stage plans for the two-storey premises include a glass-fronted entrance providing a street-side view of the stills, a stunning rooftop terrace featuring Edinburgh Gin botanicals, and private gin tasting rooms.

Since the brand’s launch in 2010, Edinburgh Gin has experienced unprecedented growth and in 2016 was acquired by Ian Macleod Distillers, which is providing the entire funding package for the new distillery. The expansion will see production capacity of Edinburgh Gin increase by more than 200%.

Neil Mowat, UK marketing director at Ian Macleod Distillers, said:
“This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the evolution of Edinburgh Gin. This investment is our commitment to continued innovation and growth. Working with local businesses including Staran Architects and Contagious, we are confident this will be a stunning distillery that offers a gin experience quite unlike any other.”

Oliver Munden, Planner at GVA adds:
“We are delighted to have lodged proposals for our client Ian Macleod Distillers at this key city site. Staran Architects have created a modern yet sympathetic design that will sit comfortably alongside its historic neighbours and will produce a unique visitor experience.”
