Major instruction on Yorkshire ‘Waste to Energy’ plant to manage business rates
21 November 2018GVA have been instructed by North Yorkshire County Council to manage the business rates on their recently commissioned £300 million Waste Recovery Park plant at Allerton, near Knaresbrough in North Yorkshire.
This instruction follows other similar waste to energy plants, which the Energy, Waste Management & Minerals team has assessed for clients, such as SUEZ, Veolia and several local authorities across the UK. We have now acted on three sites in the area including one in Leeds and at Ferrybridge, where a second plant is now also under construction.

We are currently gathering information and preparing our rating valuation on behalf of the client to commence negotiations with the Valuation Office. The intention is to minimise and pre-agree the assessment, benefiting the cash flow. The expected rates payable to the local authority will be over £1 million per year.
About the plant
The plant is capable of processing up to 320,000 tonnes per annum of domestic waste collected from across North Yorkshire and the City of York. The plant is located on a historic landfill, sustaining the long-term waste management use of the location.
