Culham Campus

Background

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is a public body at the forefront of fusion energy research and technology based at Culham Campus in Oxfordshire. Culham operates as a fusion centre of excellence and cluster, spanning 80 hectares and serving as one of the largest employment centres in the county. The campus combines leading fusion research with commercial research and technology capabilities, currently hosting around 40 commercial tenants. Designated in 2024 as the UK's first AI 'Growth Zone' and forming a key part of the Oxfordshire Knowledge Spine, Culham Campus is positioned as an international hub for scientific advancement and innovation in the fast-growing fusion sector.

Our impact

Avison Young was appointed to provide strategic investment and development consultancy for UKAEA, supporting the delivery of a new Framework Masterplan and advising on a strategic investment partner to deliver the next phase of campus development, including critical data centre infrastructure. Our work enabled UKAEA's commercial ambitions to create a centre of international excellence whilst keeping the UK at the forefront of fusion energy commercialisation. Additionally, Avison Young successfully advised on the launch of the Hornbill Building, securing 80,000 sq ft of premium R&D space for UKAEA. This BREEAM "Excellent" rated development, sits at the heart of the UK's Fusion and Technology Cluster, and demonstrates our expertise in partnering with ambitious organisations to deliver their long-term strategic growth development goals.
